Desperately Seeking Ren

This week is homecoming at the high school. And you know what that means, don’t you? Dress up days are here again. The skies above are clear again. So let’s sing a song of cheer again for dress up days are here again. Sorry. I couldn’t resist.

Anywhoo, Ren loves to dress up. Throughout school she has looked forward to any and all occasions in which to do so, whether it be a part in a school or church play or dressing up to present a report on a famous person (I’m remembering back to her as Helen Keller in the 3rd grade or Cleopatra in the 6th, in which she recycled the Halloween costume she wore as a seven-year-old). So homecoming week is especially fun for her.

This year’s theme is Tower of STARS. Each letter in the word STARS signifies something that could be worn that day. S day on Monday could have been for sleep ware, superheroes, etc.

I think she has looked totally cute each day. She would probably prefer I use the word cool to cute, but as a mom that would be quite the stretch. “Ooh, Ren. You look super cool today,” is not likely to come out of my mouth. But she did look cute.

My favorite has to be from yesterday. R day. Some came as rappers. One guy dressed up as Rambo. Ren chose retro. 80s retro to be specific. So Wednesday afternoon we headed out to locate anything and everything from the decade of my teenage years.

For someone a little too weak in the wallet to throw a whole lot of money at a high school dress up day I thought we’d stop by the Goodwill store and see what we could wrangle together there. Specifically, we were looking for oversized sweaters and leggings in bold colors. We found a large red sweater in the men’s section but nothing else. I debated not getting it but at 6:45 p.m. I knew we were running low on time to shop so I bought it.

Then we headed on over to the mall. Rue 21? Nothing. Buckle (Ren’s suggestion)? No way (not for a costume)! Wet Seal? Score! We found the skirt, tank, leggings, tights and bracelets there. Next, we headed to Claire’s to pick up a pair of lacy, fingerless gloves and a hair bow/headband. And to top it all off, we finished our shopping by heading to Megan’s Closet for a light-washed denim jacket and bright pink belt. Megan’s Closet is Ren’s favorite shopping venue. Why? Because it is literally her cousin Megan's closet and she steals from it quite a lot!

Everything was priced reasonably enough that I didn’t feel a whole lot of guilt. We were able to put together a great getup for homecoming and she can wear it again in about 10 days for Halloween. Plus, most of what was bought can be worn again with other outfits and look okay. Well, maybe not the lace gloves.

We had a lot of fun Thursday morning getting ready for school. Ren got a big kick out of her big hair, a must for any 80s day. The day was a success! Unfortunately, I think we may have stripped off another layer of the ozone with the Aqua Net.

I don’t know about you, but I feel the need to go watch The Breakfast Club and listen to some Duran Duran.

The Thursday Three

Well, I’ve just been blown away this evening. I have been honored with my first blogging award. The ever sweet Kate over at Southern Belle Simple
has awarded me the Versatile Blogger Award. Right back at ya, Kate. You’re great!

It seems that this distinction comes with a stipulation, though. In order to receive it I must list 7 things about myself. I think I might be able to do that if I wrack my brain hard enough. You remember, it hasn’t been long since I filled you guys in on 100 things about me. Surely I can come up with 7 more.

I actually had another post ready for tonight until I found out about the award. Therefore, today’s Thursday Three will need to become the Thursday Seven. And in honor of my honor I think I’ll list 7 great things I’ve won over the years.

1. $50
Once when I was about 13 my family visited Cave City, Ky (okay, stop laughing. It was only about an hour’s drive from my home and we decided to go for a couple days... every other year. I guess you can start laughing again). Anyway, at this little souvenir shop that sold a lot of things made out of cedar and corn cobs, I registered in a drawing to win $50 cash. Of course, I never thought I’d win but a few weeks later a $50 bill arrived at my house in the mail. Talk about some honest shopkeepers.
2. Most Thoughtful Girl
This honor was bestowed upon me at the tender age of nine by my 4th grade teacher as part of an end-of-the-year classroom awards day. There are some who have doubted the legitimacy of this award over the years.
3. Most Talkative
Sophomore year band awards. This award was never in doubt.
Now that's a high-quality certificate

4. Miss Southern Belle 2nd Runner-up
This was a hometown pageant to celebrate Tennessee’s bicentennial in 1986, and my first experience with an up-do.
A really UP up-do

5. 2nd place in Poetry Recitation
I recited a poem about a rose at Union University Spanish competitions held in Jackson, Tn. during my junior (?) year of high school. Versos Sencillos por Jose Marti. That means “Simple Verses by Jose Marti” and it is the only part that I can still recite today.

6. Versatile Blogger Award
Given to me by the ever fabulous Kate.

7. My husbandIt did take some wooing, especially after the french fries caper. Refer back to my May 4th post to refresh your memory about this incident.
Any guess as to the decade in which my senior prom occurred?

Thanks again. It seems only right that I now pass the award on to others. But who? I’ll have to to give that some thought and get back with you. Stay tuned.

Skate Date

Today we spent a few hours celebrating Weston Shane's 9th birthday at the local skating rink. Weston is my great-nephew.
I have not been skating in yeeaaarrrrs. My skateless streak remains unchanged after today. But, rewind 25 years, I did quite well whenever I strapped 8 wheels to my feet.
Megan and Jessie lead Ren around the floor. By the end of the party she was able to hold her own (self up).

During the two decades of my youth, the 70's and 80's, it seemed that every town with more than 1,000 people had a roller rink. And while our little town did not, we were surrounded by three other towns that did.
John helping John-Heath, who looked like a newborn colt...all legs and not sure what to do with them.

And almost everyone, at some point in their adolescent years, either attended a birthday party or held their own party at one of these fine establishments. A milestone of my very own life, my 13th birthday, was held at the Portland Skating Center. I think I still have the free t-shirt I received packed away somewhere.

Meg and Dylan (my other great-nephew) who was very focused and dedicated to learning to skate.
Then roller-skating fell out of fashion and many a skating rink was forced to close up shop, including the three closest to my town. And for years we were left without this form of entertainment (even if you didn't skate you could get a kick out of watching others fall). Luckily, a nice new rink opened up in our county seat just a couple years ago, and there has been a re-emergence in this family-friendly past time. And, thankfully, they even play some of the classics from the 80's rinks.

Ren and Megan with the birthday boy.

DO YOU REMEMBER...
A partial early/mid-80's roller rink play list
"You Dropped a Bomb On Me"
"Another One Bites the Dust"
"I Love Rock n Roll"
"Freak-a-zoid"
"Centerfold"
"We Are Family"
Any Journey song for Couples' Skate
And, no birthday party at the skate rink would be complete without "Limbo" or the "Hokey Pokey".
Every limbo boy and girl
All around the limbo world
Gonna do the limbo rock
All around the limbo clock.
Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go unda limbo stick.
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock
